Low Income Housing in Los Angeles

This page exists to be straight with you before you spend a phone call finding out. Searching for low income housing in Los Angeles with no waiting list usually means trying to get past the voucher queues, and those queues belong to the public programs. Here's the good news. A bed in a Wellness Housing house is arranged with one phone call and a tour, not a place in a line.

Wellness Housing is a private operator with three houses in South Los Angeles. It is not a county program, it is not Section 8 and it is not a voucher program of any kind. Nobody here can put you on a county list and nobody here can tell you whether you qualify for one. A bed here is arranged over the phone with the people who run the houses rather than through anybody's waiting list.

What is on offer is one bed in a shared bedroom. Every room is shared and every bed is rented to one adult. There are no private rooms, no apartments and no separate units at any Wellness Housing address. The choice is a bunk bed or a single bed in a shared room, paid by the resident or through General Relief or the START Program. Power, water and gas are included. The room is furnished before you arrive and each bed has a chest of drawers of its own. There is no credit check, no security deposit and no lease to sign.

Rent can also be paid by a third party. Wellness Housing accepts General Relief through Los Angeles County DPSS, the DPSS Pilot Program, the START Program and other third party rent assistance, and that is normal here rather than a complication. It comes up once, at intake, and then it never comes up again. Whether you qualify for General Relief is a question for DPSS.

If what you actually need is a place of your own, or a home for more than one person, Wellness Housing is not it, and the honest thing is to point you somewhere better. The Los Angeles Housing Department, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Development Authority and 211 LA all run or list programs, and each of them sets its own requirements. If a bed in a shared house is what you are looking for, call 562-716-4568 and come and walk through one.

Paperwork For Rent Assistance In Los Angeles

If a third party is paying the rent, Wellness Housing completes the housing verification forms that program asks for. There is no county waiting list to join here, because those lists sit with the housing authorities rather than with a private landlord. Say on the phone how the rent would be paid and the rest is worked out with your caseworker directly.

  • General Relief through Los Angeles County DPSS accepted
  • The DPSS Pilot Program, the START Program and other third party rent assistance accepted
  • DPSS decides eligibility, not a housing provider
  • Caseworkers can call 562-716-4568 directly

Where To Ask About Programs Wellness Housing Does Not Run

Los Angeles County DPSS

General Relief and the DPSS Pilot Program are administered by the Department of Public Social Services. Wellness Housing accepts both as payment, along with the START Program, and explains none of them. The program decides who qualifies, not Wellness Housing.

The City And County Housing Authorities

The Los Angeles Housing Department, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Development Authority handle vouchers, public housing and subsidized units, and each one opens and closes its own waiting list. None of that runs through Wellness Housing.

211 LA And LAHSA

211 LA answers around the clock and lists housing and crisis resources across the county. LAHSA coordinates the county's homeless services. Both are better first calls than a private landlord if tonight is the problem.

Questions About Low Income Housing In Los Angeles

Who keeps the waiting lists for low income housing in Los Angeles?

The city and county housing authorities do. The Los Angeles Housing Department, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Development Authority each run their own waiting lists for vouchers and public housing, and each one decides when a list opens and closes. Wellness Housing is a private operator, administers none of those programs and cannot put anybody on one of those lists.

Is Wellness Housing Section 8?

No. Section 8 is a voucher program for a place of your own and Wellness Housing is not part of it. If you hold a voucher for a private unit, Wellness Housing is not what you are looking for, and the Los Angeles Housing Department and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles are the right places to start.

How do I apply for low income housing in Los Angeles?

That depends which program you mean, and Wellness Housing is not the right place to ask. The Los Angeles Housing Department, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Development Authority and 211 LA all run or list programs, and each one decides its own requirements and runs its own waiting list.

What does a bed at Wellness Housing cost?

The choice is a bunk bed or a single bed in a shared room, paid by the resident or through General Relief or the START Program. Power, water and gas are included. There is no security deposit and no credit check. The monthly rate for each is published on the pricing page.

Can General Relief pay for it?

Wellness Housing accepts General Relief through Los Angeles County DPSS, the DPSS Pilot Program, the START Program and other third party rent assistance. Whether you qualify for General Relief is a question for DPSS rather than for a housing provider. When DPSS pays for a bed, the resident does not pay the difference.

Where can I stay if I have nowhere to go tonight?

Wellness Housing is a place you move into rather than a place you land the same night. For tonight, 211 LA answers around the clock and LAHSA lists the county's crisis and outreach services.

Stop Waiting And Tour Wellness Housing

Your next step doesn't have to depend on a list. Call, ask what's open, and come see it. Someone answers Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm Pacific.
